Celebrate National Nutrition Month This March
VALDOSTA – Each March, National Nutrition Month highlights the vital role nutrition plays in overall health and well-being. The Georgia Department of Public Health’s South Health District is dedicated to promoting health and wellness across our communities and encourages residents to take part in this annual campaign.
National Nutrition Month emphasizes the importance of making informed food choices and creating healthy eating habits, which are both necessary for a healthier life. This year’s theme, “Food Connects Us,” celebrates the link between nutrition, health, community, and cultural traditions, reinforcing how food brings people together.
“Food is more than just something we eat, it connects us,” said Holly Rountree, RD, LD, District Nutrition Services Director. ” Our goal in public health is to make sure individuals and families have the resources and education they need to make healthy food choices. National Nutrition Month is a great time to learn how food affects our lives and find simple ways to eat healthier.”
Food plays a big role in our daily lives, from bringing us together at family gatherings to helping us stay healthy. By learning to cook and plan balanced meals, we can not only improve our health but also explore our connection to the foods that are part of our culture and traditions. Exploring this connection can mean trying new ingredients, adding traditional dishes to our meals, or sharing food with family and friends to celebrate both our culture and being together.
Nutrition and Public Health
Healthy eating patterns can help prevent chronic diseases such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers. According to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2020-2025, a balanced diet includes:
- Fruits and vegetables
- Whole grains
- Lean proteins
- Dairy or fortified soy alternatives
- Limited saturated fats, sodium, and added sugars
Local food sources, like farmers’ markets or community gardens, and community resources, like WIC, SNAP, or food banks, help make sure our communities have access to a variety of healthy foods
Through programs like WIC, South Health District provides families with essential nutrition education and resources. Our WIC nutritionists play a vital role in helping individuals make informed choices for themselves and their families from the beginning.
From the time we are born and throughout our lives, proper nutrition plays a crucial role in supporting overall health and well-being. Making simple changes today, like incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your meals or adopting sustainable eating habits, can have a lasting, positive effect on your health.
