In the U.S., flu season typically spans the fall and winter months, with flu activity usually starting in October and peaking between December and February. Although influenza viruses circulate year-round, now is the time to prepare and protect yourself.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone aged 6 months and older receive a flu vaccine annually. Vaccination is the first line of defense against the flu, which can be especially dangerous for certain high-risk groups. These include young children, pregnant women, individuals with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or heart and lung disease, and adults aged 65 and older.

“Getting a flu vaccine is a proactive and essential step in taking control of your health,” said Dr. Mark Eanes, District Health Director for South Health District. “It’s a simple action that not only protects you but also helps safeguard those around you who may be more vulnerable to severe flu complications. Taking this step now ensures you’re doing your part to stay healthy this season.”

South Health District serves ten counties in South Georgia: Ben Hill, Berrien, Brooks, Cook, Echols, Irwin, Lanier, Lowndes, Tift, and Turner. Flu vaccines are available at all county health departments, but appointments are recommended.

Most insurance plans, including Aetna, Anthem BCBS, Cigna, Coventry, United Healthcare, Medicaid (PeachState, AmeriGroup, CareSource, and PeachCare), and Medicare, are accepted. Be sure to bring your insurance card to your appointment. For those without insurance, self-pay options are available.
