Hurricane Season Preparedness

Hurricane season can bring power outages, road closures, flooding, and limited access to healthcare services. Preparing ahead of time can help protect you, your family, and those who depend on medical care or support services. South Health District encourages all residents to make a plan before a storm is approaching.

Stock Up on Prescriptions

In a hurricane or tropical storm, pharmacies may close and travel may become difficult. Refill prescriptions early and keep at least a two-week supply of essential medications on hand whenever possible. Include over-the-counter medications, first aid supplies, and any specialty medical items your household may need in your emergency kit.

Plan for Temperature-Sensitive Medications

Some medications, including insulin and other refrigerated prescriptions, can become unsafe if they are not stored properly during power outages or evacuation. Have a plan to keep medications cool using insulated bags or coolers with ice packs, and know how long medications can safely remain at room temperature. Speak with your healthcare provider or pharmacist ahead of time if you have questions about storage needs.

Prepare for Medical Equipment and Power Outages

Power outages are common during severe weather and may affect medical equipment that relies on electricity. Keep extra batteries, charging devices, or portable power sources available for equipment such as oxygen concentrators, CPAP machines, or mobility devices. If possible, consider access to a generator and learn about local emergency assistance programs that may support residents with medical needs during disasters.

Make a Plan for Everyone You Care About

Emergency preparedness should include the needs of children, older adults, and people with disabilities or chronic health conditions. Make sure your emergency plan includes backup caregivers, transportation arrangements, communication plans, medications, medical supplies, and any support services your loved ones may need during an emergency.

Have an Evacuation Plan

Know where you will go if evacuation becomes necessary and plan ahead for how you will safely leave your area. Keep a go bag ready with essentials including medications, water, snacks, chargers, important documents, and basic supplies. Review your plan with your household so everyone knows what to do before an emergency occurs.

Keep Important Medical Documents Accessible

If you need to evacuate, bring important medical information with you. Keep copies of medication lists, prescriptions, allergies, insurance cards, immunization records, and healthcare provider contact information in a waterproof folder and saved digitally on your phone or another secure device. Having quick access to this information can help ensure continuity of care during an emergency.

Be Prepared Before the Storm

The best time to prepare is before a hurricane or tropical storm is in the forecast. Taking simple steps now can help keep your household safer and make recovery easier after a storm. South Health District encourages residents to stay informed, build an emergency kit, and create a plan for healthcare needs during hurricane season.
