FITZGERALD, GA – South Health District is proud to announce that Amanda Landon, BSN, RN, has been named County Nurse Manager for Ben Hill County Health Department, effective September 1, 2026. Landon has more than 15 years of healthcare experience and has served as a Public Health Nurse with South Health District in both Ben Hill and Irwin Counties since 2025.

Prior to joining the team at South Health District, Landon worked in women’s health and obstetric care, serving as both an Assistant Nurse Manager and Nurse Manager. In addition to her leadership experience, Landon has served as a PRN Charge Nurse in a skilled nursing and rehabilitation setting, providing care for older adults and individuals with complex healthcare needs. She also has extensive experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

“My diverse clinical and leadership background has provided me with a well-rounded perspective on patient care, health education and advocacy,” Landon said. “I truly recognize the importance of meeting individuals where they are in their healthcare journey and value making meaningful connections with my patients.”

Landon’s appointment comes after the previous Ben Hill County Nurse Manager, Layne Harrell, MSN, RN, was named the Director of Nursing for South Health District. Harrell said of her successor, “I am excited that Amanda has taken on this role. She brings wealth of knowledge and experience and has a true heart for service. I think that the Ben Hill community will be well served under her leadership.”

While her time in public health has been only a small part of her clinical experience, Landon has found a true passion for the work she is doing. She explains, “I chose a career in public health because I value the meaningful connections I am able to build with my patients and the community,” she said. “As the saying goes, ‘If you love what you do, you never really work a day in your life.’ I feel truly blessed to have found a career that allows me to serve others, build meaningful relationships, and make a difference in the lives of the people in my community.”

Landon also praises the support of her public health coworkers, “My coworkers in Ben Hill and Irwin Counties shared with me their own reasons for loving public health, and I not only listened to their stories, but truly took them to heart. Their passion for serving their communities, combined with the passion I already had for helping others, strengthened my appreciation for public health and solidified my love for this work.”

In addition to her role as County Nurse Manager, Landon is also the proud mother to Brianna and considers being a mother one of her greatest sources of pride and encouragement. She is also a proud fur mom to her beloved fur babies – Jersey, Capri, Oliver and Bits.

When asked if she had one message for the Ben Hill County community, Landon said, “I want the people of Ben Hill County to know that I will always serve with an open heart and an open mind. I want every person who walks through the doors of the Ben Hill County Health Department to feel heard, seen, respected, and welcomed. I am here not only to provide support, education, and healthcare services, but also to build meaningful, long-standing relationships within the community. My hope is that everyone knows they have a place here and that we are here to support them without judgment.”
