Infectious Disease Program

The Infectious Disease (ID) Program provides follow-up for individuals who have a communicable disease such as tuberculosis, meningitis, hepatitis, or one of many other communicable diseases. Contact investigation is included.

Included in South Health District's ID Program are the Tuberculosis (TB) Program, Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Program and the HIV/AIDS Program.



Sexually Transmitted Diseases Program -

The Georgia STD Program standards are based on current Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) guidelines for STD diagnostic, treatment and disease intervention services. Services provided include:

  • STD/HIV Screening (through local health department)
  • STD Treament (through local health department)
  • HIV Referral
  • Client & contact interviews
  • Investigation of STD suspects
  • Partner notification
  • STD/Health Education
  • Case management and follow-up
  • Follow-up and surveillance reporting

Tuberculosis Program -

The purpose of the Georgia Tuberculosis (TB) Program is to control transmission, prevent illness and disease to TB. Services include:

  • TB screenings
  • Case management
  • Directly Observed Therapy (DOT)
  • Directly Observed Preventive Therapy (DOPT)
  • Surveillance
  • Provisions of TB medications (for pulmonary cases)
  • Chest x-rays (for positives and new positives)
  • Follow-up on contacts
