Oral Health

The South Health District's Oral Health program is primarily a school-based dental health education and preventive care program. The populations targeted are PreK – 5th grade that do not have a dentist or access to dental care.

The dental health education consists of information related to proper oral health care and for the 4th & 5th grade children information is given on the dangers of using chewing or “spit” tobacco.

The dental services provided are performed on board a mobile dental trailer that is taken to the elementary schools. The preventive care services may include exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, dental sealants and x-rays. The mobile unit is equipped to provide fillings and simple extractions. Our aim is not to compete with private dentists, so our priority is to refer children with urgent needs to a local dentist when possible.

Services also include dental screening exams for Head Start children, oral exams at various health departments, and for children entering school. We provide educational information for WIC clients and at health fairs.

Medicaid and PeachCare are billed where applicable or services are charged using a sliding fee scale based on family income.
